Trainer: John Kennedy, Senior HMI, maintained schools and academies

John Kennedy is a qualified teacher and has postgraduate qualifications in Education and Philosophy. Following a successful teaching career, John held senior management positions in local authorities. He has particular expertise in the management of behaviour, attendance and safeguarding. John leads inspections of secondary and primary schools, academies and pupil referral units and is currently Ofsted’s education link for Hackney. He has inspected aspects of local authority children’s services.

Ofsted updates with John Kennedy, HMI for Secondary and Special Schools

Ofsted recently unveiled a set of reforms intended to ease the pressures on teachers and school leaders during inspections. These changes, prompted by feedback from educators, aim to uphold the rigour and accuracy of inspections while reducing stress for those involved.

 

In our upcoming briefing session, John Kennedy HMI will update school leaders on the significant changes Ofsted is implementing following the Big Listen, and any changes arising from the recent change in Government. Key updates from the latest version of the Ofsted Handbook will be highlighted, including the temporary pause on inspections and a renewed emphasis on wellbeing. The session will provide an overview of recent training programs for Ofsted Inspectors, as well as an analysis of published data since the Summer term. We will delve into Ofsted's key focus on starting with impact and working backwards to intent, with particular attention to vulnerable and disadvantaged groups. Additionally, we will review any changes to Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).

The Education Inspection Framework: Ofsted briefings for schools (behaviour and attitudes/personal development)

This 60 minute session will explore the Ofsted framework in relation to the behaviour and attitudes/personal development judgement.

The way that Ofsted inspects schools significantly changed in 2019 with the publication of a  new Education Inspection Framework. There were 24 Ofsted inspections in Hackney last year. Common trends learned from these inspections will be shared. The sessions have been updated to reflect the current changes to inspection and what inspectors are looking for. 

These three short sessions senior school leaders will explore Ofsted inspection practice in Primary and Secondary settings. Led by Jason Marantz with up to date, practical experience of inspecting schools across both Primary and Secondary sectors, these sessions will support school leaders to: 

• Understand how Ofsted will evaluate the quality of education and know the different  approach to a Section 5 and a Section 8 inspection. 
• Consider the judgements for Leadership & Management, Behaviour & Attitudes,  Personal Development, 6th Form/ EYFS. 
• Prepare for a successful interview with the inspector, including the initial telephone  conversation. 
• Consider how to refine practices and prepare staff for a positive inspection outcome.
• Ensure that school self-evaluation supports the inspection process.

This short session will ensure that senior school leaders and middle leaders will explore Ofsted inspection practice in Primary and Secondary settings. Led by Calvin Henry with up to date, practical experience of inspecting schools across both Primary and Secondary sectors, this session will support school leaders to: 

• Understand how Ofsted will evaluate the quality of education and know the different approach to a Section 5 and a Section 8 inspection. 
• Understand the components of a good or better Quality of Education.
• Define curriculum intent, implementation, and impact.
• Familiarise yourself with the inspection process, particularly the 'deep dive' line of inquiry, and develop strategies for effective self-evaluation and confident engagement with inspections.
• Prepare for a successful interview with the inspector, including the initial telephone conversation. 
• Consider how to refine practices and prepare staff for a positive inspection outcome.
• Ensure that school self-evaluation supports the inspection process.
